The Ripple Effect

Just as ripples spread out when a single pebble is dropped into water, the actions of individuals can have far-reaching effects. —Dalai Lama

The ripple effects of our Ideas that Matter program have hit the shore here at Sappi, just as they continue to spread to external programs and people. If you’ve read or heard about Ideas that Matter, or if you’ve ever entered or won a grant, you know that this program recognizes and supports print designers who partner with nonprofit organizations. You probably also know that, over the past eighteen years of this program, we've awarded $13 million in grants used to assist more than 500 charities. And, you might have read about some of the grant winners or watched our inspirational videos about their projects and successes. What you probably don’t know is how important Ideas that Matter is to Sappi North America and our employees. Ideas that Matter is a cornerstone of our corporate social responsibility efforts and, this past year, it also inspired a new internal program—Employee Ideas that Matter (EITM)! Through the new EITM program we’re able to support charitable programs such as funding a trail cleanup, providing new training equipment for an after-school program, or building and installing “pop-up” libraries in public spaces. Not only does EITM provide direct funds for local organizations in communities where our employees live and work, but it also supports the causes that are most meaningful to those employees—more than 2,200 members of the Sappi North American family from our mills, from our forestry management and sustainability teams, from our sales and marketing departments—and every department in between. At Sappi, we want to thank you for believing in the Ideas that Matter program, which made our new employee program possible. We can now reach even more communities and help even more people thanks to your enthusiasm and participation in the original program. Are you planning to drop your own social impact pebble into the pond this year? There’s still time to submit a grant application to Ideas that Matter and bring your creative idea for social good to life. For more information and to download an application form, visit Ideas that Matter. Does that make sense?
