Technician in Training programme

When you join us a technical intern, you'll learn from and be supported by some of our top experts, so you can get extensive real-world experience on your way to qualifying.

About the programme

As a Technician in Training, you can choose from a wide variety of programmes with Sappi. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Electrical
  • Mechanical
  • Production
  • Newsprint
  • Kraft linerboard
  • Groundwood
  • Digesters
  • Bleaching
  • Chemical recovery, and
  • Boilers.

When you join a technical training programme, we'll make sure you're fully supported. You'll receive extensive coaching from your own mentor for the duration of the course, as well as on-the-job and formal classroom training. This will help prepare you for biannual performance assessments in conjunction with your line manager.

As part of the programme, you'll also need to complete a log book of all development activities to ensure all learning opportunities are taken full advantage of. If required, you'll also get assistance with any necessary licensing.

Employment contracts typically last between 12 and 18 months depending on the nature of the role and Sappi's business requirements.

Upon completion of the programme, technicians are invited to apply for any relevant available vacancies at Sappi.

The availability of internships can change on an annual basis. Due to the nature of the roles, you will need to be studying for qualifications in one of the below, or similar:

  • Electrical or mechanical engineering
  • Chemical engineering
  • Pulp- and paper production, or
  • Boiler maker.

Applications are subject to the standard recruitment process.

Our Engineer in Training (EIT) programme ensures the next generation of talent is fully equipped with the knowledge they need.
Our Forester in Training programme means you can learn from our onsite experts and train for a recognised qualification at the same time.
Learnerships are structured learning programmes that allow you to get the best of both worlds by combining both theoretical and practical elements.

Meet just some of the many trainees who have benefited from Sappi's development programmes, from engineering to forestry.
