2022 was a remarkable year for Sappi. We made steady progress in advancing our business strategy, including the implementation of three major decarbonisation projects in Europe. It was also a strong year for strengthening our partnerships, including our new membership in the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). I firmly believe that through collaboration we can and will accelerate our contribution to a thriving world.

Sappi’s science-based targets approved, a significant milestone on our decarbonisation journey

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has approved our target to reduce carbon emissions 41.5% per ton of product by 2030, as well as our commitment that 44% of our suppliers by spend have science-based targets by 2026.

Expanding functional paper production at Alfeld Mill

Scaling-up our functional paper business is at the core of Sappi’s strategy to support a more circular economy. Investments made at Alfeld Mill in Germany starting in 2021 enable us to bring these circular functional papers to more of our European customers.

Switching to renewables at Maastricht Mill with an 'e-boiler'

The steam boilers that Sappi needs for paper production are increasingly part of the solution to climate change. Instead of relying on fossil fuels like gas, Maastricht Mill has installed an electronic or ‘e-boiler’ so that wind and solar can become part of the energy mix.
