Somerset Synergy® pulp, produced at Sappi's Somerset mill in Skowhegan, Maine, is a mixture of dense northern hardwood and a controlled amount of spruce, fir and red pine softwood. This select combination of species produces a pulp of unique character that promotes improved finished product attributes.
The Somerset mill has a state of the art NBHK pulp mill producing 520,000 tons per year and 3 world class paper machines. The Sappi Somerset pulp and paper mill is ISO 9001 Quality System certified and has earned the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System certification. The Somerset pulping operation is ECF (Elemental Chlorine Free) and FSC®, SFI® and PEFC™ Chain of Custody certified (FSC-C014955). Somerset Synergy® pulp is also registered for use in the making of paper products that display the Nordic Ecolabel.
Somerset Synergy® pulp comes in a standard market bale and a "super bale". Multiple wire configurations are offered on market bales. A super bale is compact enough to be handled and shipped two high by truck without wires, wrapper or dunnage - another safety and cost savings from using Somerset Synergy® pulp in super bale form.
The wood blend consists of 85% hardwood for good formation and surface properties, and 15% softwood for wet web strength and final product tear. This synergistic blend is controlled to maintain a consistent fiber length and strength. The production of Somerset Synergy is carefully monitored for Controlled Fiber Length (CFL) and intrinsic fiber strength as measured by Pulmac Wet Zero Span FQT.
