Sappi ReFibre

Waste management is one of the most significant challenges we face today, and Sappi ReFibre has developed an outsourced business model that enables us to not only recycle large volumes of paper, but also benefit businesses and communities as part of the process.

We procure board and paper for recycling from an extensive network of agents across the country. This is sourced directly from homes, offices, wholesalers and retailers, as well as from manufacturers in both the formal and informal sectors. Most agents offer a one stop service; collecting paper and other recyclables such as glass and certain kinds of plastic and metal.

Sappi ReFibre offers a secure market for certain categories of recyclable paper and assists its agents by providing both equipment and business support.

Recovered board and paper is a valuable resource for Sappi where it is used to supplement virgin fibre in the papermaking process. Many of our papers contain recycled fibre.

Our approach to recycling
Sappi is a global leader in paper production, and produces high quality paper using virgin fibre, recycled fibre and bagasse which is recovered from the sugar processing industry.

The virgin fibre used in the papermaking process is sourced from Sappi’s own tree plantations and from the plantations of contracted suppliers, which are certified by the international Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) for sound environmental management. The company uses recycled fibre to produce a number of paper grades such as packaging papers, linerboard and corrugated boards, as well as general printing grades.

Sappi’s approach is to maximise the environmental benefits both of growing trees for virgin fibre and of using as much recycled fibre and bagasse as possible.

Well managed tree plantations have, amongst other things, an important role to play in carbon sequestration and without the cultivation of trees as an agricultural commodity over the past 150 years, the level of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere would be significantly higher than it is today. Sappi plants more trees than we harvest.

Recycling, on the other hand, reduces the need for scarce landfill sites, reduces the amount of energy and water needed in the manufacturing process, and also significantly reduces the methane emissions being released into the atmosphere from landfill sites.

Sappi ReFibre is Sappi Southern Africa’s secondary fibre division and is responsible for the recycling of used paper and paper products.

‘Reduce, reuse and recycle’ is a phrase that has become a sustainability mantra all over the world.
Few people routinely recycle partly because of the effort involved and partly because they don’t know how to recycle.
Apart from recycling at home, you can easily start a paper recycling project in your office, community, church, club or school.

The principles of responsible corporate citizenship underpin our business decisions, strategies and processes and are incorporated into our everyday operations.
