Our commitment to the safety and well-being of our employees is a value shared by all of us at Sappi North America. Without a demonstrated track record of continuous safety improvement, we simply would not be a successful company.
Sappi North America’s exceptionally low rate of lost time injury is a point of pride and distinction for all of us. The region’s impressive safety performance reflects the engagement and focus of our employees and the personal accountability they bring to the job every day.
Cloquet Mill is a shining star for safety performance, routinely reaching 1 million hours worked without injury. Located on the banks of the St Louis River since 1898, it employs about 700 people in the production of high-quality graphic papers. The mill’s employees demonstrate every day that its safety milestone banner, “dedicated to safety”, is a fundamental part of the mill’s culture.
Since joining the Sappi family in 2019, the Matane Mill in Quebec, Canada has also achieved impressive safety results among its 150 employees. They also regularly reach 1,000 days without a lost-time injury. The pulp produced here is a high-quality, high-yield bleached chemi-thermo mechanical pulp (BCTMP) made from either Aspen or Maple hardwood.
Our Technology Center in Westbrook, Maine continues to hold the best record. Employees have reached 14 years without a lost-time injury. In operation since 1926, the Center is where 50 technicians, engineers and scientists discover and implement new products for our global business. Employees have fully embraced the SafeStart programme, encouraging employees to take personal responsibility for the safety and wellbeing of themselves and their co-workers.
While we realise that we can never rest and declare success when it comes to the wellbeing of our employees, we are proud of our record and continuously strive to put safety first.
