Your local Sappi forester knows the ins and outs of your neck of the woods and is dedicated to meeting your forest management objectives. The Sappi Maine Forestry Team will work diligently with you to:
Set up a meeting to walk your woodlot with you, if you are available, to assess the health of your forest stocking levels, species composition, while also gaining an understanding of your forest management objectives. Using the information gathered from walking your property and understanding your objectives, the forester will provide you with recommendations for your woodlot and discuss a path forward.
If it is decided to move forward with conducting a timber harvest, the forester will develop a written harvest plan to meet the unique objectives for your property.
In addition, the forester will prepare the harvest by re-establishing boundary lines, identifying and buffering any resources and regulated areas, as well as identifying any special sites.
Select a contractor with the equipment mix to meet your forest management objectives.
Administer and monitor all harvest activity throughout the duration of the harvest. Ensure all BMPs are implemented, and all the wood is marketed for highest and best use.
Conduct and monitor all close out measures at the conclusion of the harvest. Stay connected with you post-harvest to ensure your objectives continue to be met.

Charlie Hall
Charlie Hall is the Manager of the Sustainable Forestry Program at SNA. His experience at Sappi includes buying chips for the Somerset Mill under wood procurement. Prior to Sappi, he worked for James River and Crown Vantage in Berlin, New Hampshire. Charlie has a B.S. in Forestry/concentration Wood Technology from the University of Maine.
Jeremy Stultz
Jeremy has over 20-years of experience in the woods of northern New England and is a licensed forester in both Maine and New Hampshire. He has worked in several forestry business sectors including industrial, small family-owned and most recently as an owner and manager of a private consulting firm. His primary work area is south-central Maine, but travels frequently to mid-coast Maine as well as northern and eastern New Hampshire and works with private and public landowners as well as municipalities, land trusts and other timber management organizations. In his spare time Jeremy enjoys camping, canoeing and travel, fishing, hunting, gardening and home improvement projects. Jeremy is a 2000 graduate of the University of Maine.
Doug Reed
Doug graduated from the University of Maine in Orono with a bachelor’s degree in Forest Management. He spent the past 25 years working for Maine Public Lands in both the Eastern and Western Regions of the state. Doug also had his own forestry consulting business and was an associate broker specializing in timberland and recreational properties. At Sappi, Doug works with landowners in Eastern and Western Maine, both large and small, to assist them in achieving their goals for their property. Doug enjoys hiking, hunting, travel, fishing and spending time at his camp on Schoodic Lake.
Stephen Sacks
Stephen is currently licensed as a forester and holds a bachelor’s degree in Forestry as well as a minor in Surveying Engineering Technology from the University of Maine. Prior to his employment at Sappi, Stephen worked for two years as a forest technician/surveyor’s assistant for Jones Associates in Auburn, Maine. Stephen primarily works in central to eastern Maine assisting woodlot owners in the management of their properties. During his non-working hours, Stephen enjoys biking, skiing, playing the fiddle, tinkering with car mechanics, and spending time with his wife.
Austin Burrows
Austin is a 2019 graduate of the University of Maine with a B.S. double major in Forestry and Surveying Engineering Technology. He is a licensed Forester in the State of Maine and Connecticut. While attending college, he worked summers with Weyerhaeuser as a Forest Technician assisting with tree planting and timber harvest layout. Before coming to Sappi, he worked at Hull Forest Products as a Procurement Forester. Austin’s primary role is woodlot management in south-central to mid-coast Maine as well as northern and eastern New Hampshire. Austin works with a variety of landowners from private small woodlot owners and timber management organizations to state and federal organizations. In his free time Austin enjoys backpacking/hiking, running, hunting, fishing, practicing & competing in Brazilian jujitsu.
Ethan Olson
Ethan is a 2020 graduate of the University of Maine with a B.S. in Forestry. While attending college, he worked summers with JD Irving in Fort Kent as a tree planting and precommercial thinning supervisor. Before coming to Sappi, he worked at ND Paper’s Rumford Mill as a Procurement Forester and as an Associate Buyer of mill commodities. Ethan’s primary role is assisting Jeremy Stultz with woodlot management in south-central to mid-coast Maine as well as northern and eastern New Hampshire. He works with a variety of landowners from private small woodlot owners and timber management organizations to state and federal organizations. In his free time Ethan enjoys hiking, exploring Maine’s coastal towns, traveling, and learning new topics.
John Ackley
John has over 43 years of varied forest industry experience working in the woods of Northern New England. Before coming to SAPPI John worked on two different large land bases located in the Upper Kennebec Valley of Maine. Some previous roles that John has held include Operations Forester, District Manager, and Silviculture Manager. John is a State of Maine Licensed Forester and is also Board Chair of the Forester Licensing Board. John has a Master Level Pesticide Applicator’s License as well as a UAV Pilot’s License. John is a graduate of the State of New York College of Environmental Science & Forestry with a B.S. degree in Resource Management. In his spare time John likes to travel, ski, hike, and kayak.
Chloe Tilley
Chloe is a 2024 graduate of the University of Maine with a B.S. in Forestry. While attending college, she worked during the summer with Seven Islands Land Company in the Rangeley Region. Chloe's primary role at Sappi is assisting Jeremy Stultz with woodlot management in south-central to mid-coast Maine, in addition to northern and eastern New Hampshire. In her free time Chloe enjoys fly-fishing, camping, hiking, and spending time in Maine's great outdoors.
Eli Bell
Eli is from a logging and farming family in Leeds, Maine. Growing up working in the woods with his father and grandfather, he decided to continue the family tradition by pursuing a career in forestry. While studying at the University of Maine, Eli interned for Irving Woodlands and Sappi during the summers. After graduating in 2025 with a B.S. in Forest Management, he joined Sappi full-time as a Forest Technician in west-central Maine. In this role, Eli works with a variety of landowners and logging contractors while assisting senior foresters with layout and wood procurement. In his free time, Eli still enjoys working on the family farm and logging with a cable skidder. He also spends much of his time deer hunting, snowmobiling, and skiing in western Maine.

Ryan McAvoy
Ryan McAvoy has many years of experience managing wood procurement and forest products. At Sappi, he has managed wood procurement at SNA mills in Maine, Michigan and Minnesota including serving as Procurement Manager of the Northeast Region of Maine, before taking up his current role. Ryan is a graduate of the University of Maine with a B.S. in Forest Management and is a member of the Society of American Foresters and the Forest Resources Association.
Bryan Savoy
Bryan Savoy is a licensed forester in the State of Maine with 24 years of experience in forest products marketing, harvest operations, computer mapping and strategic planning. Bryan has worked with both industrial and small woodlot ownerships across the state. Bryan’s primary role at Sappi is securing open market pulpwood for the Somerset Mill in Skowhegan, Maine. In his spare time Bryan enjoys spending time with his family, skiing and exploring the local lakes. Bryan is a graduate of the University of Maine with a B.S. in Forestry.
Darren Maxsimic
Darren Maxsimic joined the Sappi Somerset Wood Procurement Team in December 2020 and is responsible for purchasing pulpwood from local wood suppliers. Darren has worked in the Maine Forest Products industry since 1989 with experiences as Timber Cruiser, Operations Forester, and Wood Buyer. Darren is a 1992 graduate of the University of Maine with a B.S. in Forest Management and is also a Professional Licensed Forester in the State of Maine. Darren enjoys spending time with family and friends hiking, fishing, and hunting.
Forest Briggs
Forest Briggs is a wood buyer for central and eastern Maine. He oversees the scalehouse operations at the Somerset mill and manages the Sappi transportation trucks. He is also the safety coordinator for the Wood Procurement Group. Forest has worked at Sappi since 2015, spending 6 years as a stumpage forester. Prior to joining Sappi, he worked as an equipment operator for a logging contractor, a procurement forester for a land management company, and was timberlands manager for a local trucking company. Forest is a licensed Maine forester, who also holds a Maine wood scalers license, a real estate license, and is a Certified Logging Professional. In his free time, he enjoys camping with his wife and kids, gardening, hunting, golf and playing hockey. Forest is a 1997 graduate of the University of Maine with a B.S. in Forest Management.
Lucas Lamond
Lucas Lamond is a graduate from the University of Maine in Orono with a degree in Forest Operations, Bioproducts and Bioenergy. Lucas has gained experience in the woods over the years while working with his father, who is a licensed forester in the State of Maine. In his spare time he enjoys hunting, fishing, and spending time with family and friends.
Sean Hatch
Sean has been in the paper and forest products industry since 2018 with experience in packaging design, inventory control, forest certification compliance, and systems management. He holds a B.S. in Marketing from Florida State University. Sean enjoys family vacations, reading, tinkering, and exploring the New England backcountry.
Belinda Trafton
Belinda Trafton has over 38 years of administrative experience and is responsible for wood scheduling agreements for both the Northeast and Lake States, insurance requirements for stumpage program and purchasing contractors, federal and state requirements for the Sappi wood truck, purchase orders, payment setup, check requests/advances, and vendor set-up. She enjoys snowmobiling, skiing, kayaking and spending time with her family and friends.
Angela Arbour
I have close to 20 years administrative experience. She is responsible for all external sales of wood for Maine and Minnesota. In addition, she coordinates the billing payments from wood sales for Maine and Minnesota. During my free time I enjoy any type of fishing, camping, going to the beach, watching all types of sports and spending time with my family and friends.
Marrieanne Baker
Marrieanne Baker graduated from Thomas College with an Associates degree in Business Management. Prior to Sappi she worked with the pharmaceutical business. During her free time she enjoys watching the Boston Red Sox, ice fishing, riding the motorcycle or spending time at camp.
Rebecca Barnard
In January 2018, Rebecca Barnard (B.S. Forest Ecosystem Restoration and Management, and a MBA) was named Manager – Forest Certification, bringing 15 years of forest management experience to improve the control environment around product claims and advance forest policy objectives. External to her role with Sappi, Rebecca also serves on the Society of American Foresters (SAF) National Policy Committee. Prior to joining Sappi, she served as the National Forestry Programs Manager for the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) from 2013-2018 and as the Forest Certification Coordinator for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) from 2008-2013. Rebecca enjoys many outdoor activities, such as hunting, biking, hiking, and kayaking.

Robert Kelso
Bob Kelso is responsible for scaling trucks delivering wood materials to Sappi's Somerset mill. He is a 1989 graduate of the University of Maine with an Associate Degree in Forest Management. In his spare time Bob enjoys spending time with his children doing outdoor activities including hiking, camping, fishing, kayaking and rafting.
Aron Bishop
Aron is responsible for scaling trucks delivering wood materials to Sappi’s Somerset mill. Aron joins us in the scalehouse after 21 years with the Maine Forest Service. Aron started out with the Forest Service as a Conservation Aid. He then transitioned to an Entomology Technician and eventually Field and Mapping Supervisor for the forest inventory group. Aron’s experience was in forest inventory and invasive forest insects. Aron is a volunteer fire fighter. In his free time he enjoys hunting, fishing and is a proud Freemason and Shriner.
Cynthia Miller
Cynthia Miller is responsible for scaling trucks delivering wood materials to Sappi’s Somerset Mill. Cynthia graduated from Kennebec Valley Community College in 1994 with an Associates Degree in Applied Science. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her family and also enjoys camping, hiking and kayaking.
Dana Hinkley
Dana Hinkley is a NH certified weighmaster and is responsible for scaling and wood yard operations at Sappi’s Ossipee, NH pile down yard. He began his career logging for the Brown Company in 1978 and then was a professional firefighter for the City of Berlin, NH for 20 years. He also designed and developed logger safety training for SFI implementation and has instructed throughout the US. From 2001-2009 he owned and operated Hinkley Timber, a mechanized logging company, and then spent 9 years as a wood yard specialist at TR Dillon’s North Stratford, NH yard. As a single dad, he enjoys spending time with his two sons who he adopted at birth.

Four things really pleased me about Sappi's harvest of my woodlot: 1) the foresters spent a lot of time with me, including walking the lot 3 times prior to the harvest, kept me informed throughout the harvest, and met with me after the harvest to review the project and make sure I was satisfied; 2) the loggers followed our plan exactly and did a superb job - and they were always happy to talk with me when I stopped by to monitor the project - and they cut 10 cords of firewood for my personal use; 3) the project was completed in all respects exactly as planned and promised; 4) the prices I received were very fair and my money was received promptly after delivery of the wood to the mills.
