Headquartered in Johannesburg, Sappi Southern Africa manages three business units: Sappi Paper and Paper Packaging, Sappi Pulp and Sappi Forests.
Regional functions like finance, human resources, sales and marketing, technical and engineering, as well as board functions, are also based here.
Founded in South Africa in 1936 to supply locally produced paper to South African consumers, we have a tradition of innovating and developing new products to meet local demand for newsprint, graphic papers, packaging papers, containerboard – used to protect our customers’ products (especially in the agricultural sector) – and tissue paper for household, medical and industrial use.
Almost all of our mills' production in South Africa is exported. Sappi Southern Africa operates four mills and has a combined production capacity of 660,000 tons of paper, 636,000 tons of paper pulp and 1.15 million tons of dissolving wood pulp per annum.

How we apply ourselves
Our mills are where we practice what we preach – explore their operations and certifications.
Tugela Mill
Tugela Mill has been in operation since 1945 and is currently the oldest purpose-built mill in the Sappi group. The mill produces neutral sulphite semi-chemical pulp for its own consumption, corrugating medium (containerboard) and lignosulphonate for export.
Ngodwana Mill
Ngodwana Mill, in continuous operation since 1966, expanded its product offering in 2013 by converting part of its paper-grade pulp output to dissolving wood pulp (DWP).
Saiccor Mill
Saiccor Mill, a Sappi Pulp facility, produces world-class products in South Africa, where technology and infrastructure meet global demands. It is located 50 km south of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal.
Stanger Mill
Stanger Mill is unique in South Africa in using bagasse as its primary raw material to produce office and tissue paper. Situated on KwaZulu-Natal’s north coast, the mill’s proximity to the neighbouring Gledhow Sugar Company ensures a steady supply of bagasse.
