Dye sublimation in sportswear: a technology built for growth

Few printing technologies have influenced modern sportswear as much as dye sublimation. From team jerseys and running shirts to cycling apparel, the technology combines design freedom, vibrant colours and flexible production.

Dye sublimation has become a key technology in sportswear manufacturing, enabling vibrant, durable designs that become part of the polyester fabric while preserving comfort and performance. Driven by growing demand for customization, on-demand production and more sustainable printing processes, the market continues to expand rapidly. Sappi's Transjet Sportsline and Transjet Sportsline Hi-Tack papers help sportswear manufacturers achieve sharp print quality, high transfer efficiency and reliable production across a wide range of performance textiles.

Few printing technologies have influenced modern sportswear as much as dye sublimation. From team jerseys and running shirts to cycling apparel, the technology combines design freedom, vibrant colours and flexible production.

Colour becomes part of the material

In dye-sublimation printing, special dyes are transferred into synthetic materials using heat. The process is particularly suitable for polyester and polyester-based textiles. Rather than forming an additional layer on the surface, the colour becomes integrated into the material itself.

This offers significant advantages for sportswear. Large-scale graphics, colour gradients, club logos, sponsor branding, names and numbers can all be incorporated into a single design. At the same time, the characteristics of lightweight performance fabrics are maintained. Sublimated polyester textiles also offer high levels of wash, light and abrasion resistance.

A growing market and customisation as the driver

The economic significance of the technology is considerable. According to Smithers Market Report the global dye-sublimation printing market was worth €10.1 billion in 2024 and is forecast to reach €14 billion by 2029. Apparel is by far the largest application segment, accounting for approximately 71.9% of global dye-sublimation print volume. Sportswear and swimwear are among its most important applications.

One of the key advantages of digital sublimation printing is flexibility. In team sports, names, numbers, sizes, sponsors and customised designs can be produced without conventional printing plates or screens. This makes smaller production runs, special collections and reorders increasingly attractive.

As a result, the industry is moving from standardised inventory towards more flexible, on-demand production. Digital processes increasingly connect design, ordering and manufacturing, enabling shorter production cycles and greater levels of personalisation.

Sustainability moves into focus

Sublimation printing delivers substantial process-related environmental benefits. Unlike conventional textile printing, it eliminates the need for water-intensive washing or steaming stages to fix dyes. Furthermore, more than 98% of modern dye-sublimation production relies on water-based inkjet inks. Combined with high-yield, recyclable transfer papers, manufacturers can significantly reduce both resource consumption and fabric waste through agile on-demand manufacturing.

Sappi Transjet: engineered precision for high-performance apparel in the sportwear production

To meet the rigorous demands of industrial sportswear production, Sappi delivers premium transfer papers tailored to specific fabric requirements and printing speeds. The dye sublimation papers Transjet Sportsline and Transjet Sportsline Hi-Tack combine proven performance with the reliability required for high-quality customised sportswear, making it an ideal partner for today's demanding sublimation applications

Choosing the right grade: Transjet Sportsline vs. Transjet Sportsline Hi-Tack

Selecting the optimal sublimation paper depends on fabric construction, mechanical elasticity and production conditions.

Transjet Sportsline is a tacky paper for stretch and elastic fabric applications. It is the efficient all-rounder and a reliable solution that has proven itself in practical use for many years. The paper is specifically designed for digital transfer printing with water-based dye-sublimation inks and mainly suited to polyester-based textiles commonly used in sportswear, where consistent colour reproduction, high transfer efficiency and reliable processing are essential.

Typical applications are dimensionally stable polyester fabrics commonly used in classic soccer kits, marathon singlets, track jackets and fan merchandise. The paper excels with high transfer yields, homogeneous solid areas and rapid ink drying - delivering reliable high-speed output and cost efficiency in standard industrial transfer processes. Transjet Sportsline is available in 90 g/m2 and 100 g/m2.

Transjet Sportsline Hi-Tack is dedicated for stretch and robust elastic fabrics in the market. The paper is related to advanced applications, where the sticky effect of the Transjet Sportsline paper is not enough. Available in 100 g/m2, Transjet Sportsline Hi-Tack paper is specifically designed for elastane-rich, four-way stretch textiles used in cycling kits, compression wear, leggings and swimwear.

Under the heat and tension of calenders or flatbed presses, elastic textiles naturally shift, expand or shrink, frequently resulting in blurred lines and costly double contours (ghosting). The paper features an activated tacky surface that holds the paper and fabric securely in place during heat exposure. By preventing relative movement and the risk of ghosting, it guarantees razor-sharp details, flawless geometric patterns and minimal scrap rates. Fast ink drying, excellent flatness and homogeneous colour results support consistent print quality and efficient production.
