Alfeld Mill

Alfeld Mill produces speciality paper products on five paper machines. The products are coated and uncoated, have a weight of 17 g/m² up to 400 g/m² and show a variety of finishes. The mill has a capacity of 275,000 tons per annum of packaging and speciality papers. With an integrated pulp plant, using locally harvested wood, it produces 120,000 tons per annum of totally chlorine-free (TCF) bleached chemical pulp for its own use.

The board produced on our PM1 is double-coated on one side and two sides on an offline coating line. The PM2 to PM5 produce single-sided smooth papers. Our PM2, PM3 and PM4 also have inline coating units and calendaring capabilities. They meet the special requirements for paper surfaces in the speciality paper segment.

Five papermaking machines, one off-line coater and numerous reel and sheet cutters form part of the extensive production installations and ensure the mill's manufacturing flexibility which allows it to match customers' needs.

Extensive local warehousing allows rapid delivery to paper merchants. In Germany, a 24-hour service is operated. The excellence of product and service, sophisticated logistics and a responsible attitude towards the environment all form part of the mill’s tradition.

Specialised seminars optimise the integration of the mill’s activities; while courses for personnel help develop technical, business and safety aspects of its operations.

Alfeld Mill is a pioneer in environmental management. Water is carefully used and treated, pulp chemicals are recovered, on-site energy comes from the combined heat and power plant and pulp processing is total chlorine-free (TCF).

Alfeld Mill is ISO 9001-, ISO 14001-, ISO 50001-, ISO 22000-, OHSAS 18001- and EMAS-certified.

Sappi Europe was the first paper company in the world to achieve multi-site, cross-border group Chain of Custody certification. All Sappi Europe mills and its sales organisations hold Chain-of-Custody certificates for both Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC™) (FSC™ C015022) and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) schemes (PEFC/07-32-76); these certifications provide proof from third-party certification bodies that the wood and fibre we use come from sustainable and controlled sources.
