Why should I consider forest management?

Forest management can accelerate the growth of your timber, meaning your trees become available for harvest on more frequent intervals. When forests are left unmanaged, crown canopies close in and stands become denser, creating competition between the trees for resources like sunlight, water, and nutrients. Also, an unmanaged forest can lead to forest pest or fire risk. When these stands undergo thoughtful forest management, more room is created for the remaining trees to grow due to less competition for needed resources. The result is greater diameter growth in the remaining trees until the crown canopy closes again. Forest management is very similar to managing your backyard garden, just on a larger scale. To help maximize the growth and productivity of your cucumber, tomato, or squash plants you need to consistently weed out undesirable species. By doing this you allow your crop plants to have more access to the resources they need; sunlight, water, and nutrients.

What is my timber worth?

Each regional Sappi North America Forestry team has a dedicated wood sales forester on staff whose job it is to maximize the return from your timber harvest. Our foresters work closely with the wood sales foresters to know the current wood markets so that your timber is being sent to the market that gives you the greatest return.

Many factors are taken into consideration when evaluating what your timber is worth. The best way to learn more is to schedule a meeting with one of our trained professionals so they can assess your unique woodlot and learn about your objectives. When our foresters are evaluating the value of your timber they are taking into account:

  • Landowner objectives

  • Acreage and volume

  • Species composition

  • Wood quality

  • Terrain

  • Road and landing area requirements

  • Harvesting equipment

  • Proximity to wood markets
