EUDR and PPWR are reshaping packaging across industries. At FACHPACK 2025, we heard that many companies are preparing, but uncertainty around timing and scope remains. Still, the direction is clear: those who adapt early will be best positioned to benefit.
Here are three practical lessons from our discussions in Nuremberg to help you navigate these new frameworks.
1. Build credibility through recyclability
Recyclability is no longer a differentiator; it’s an expectation. Both regulators and consumers now assume it as a baseline, not a marketing claim.
“There is less need to claim it everywhere because it is already embedded. The focus now is on delivering credible new packaging solutions,” said Simone Vezzu, R&D and Innovation. “Success will come from working with partners who are ready to adopt them.”
For Sappi, this means continuing to expand the functional papers portfolio, ensuring that every new product is recyclable by design and aligned with circular economy goals.
2. Stay agile despite delays
Shifting deadlines can cause uncertainty, but agility is the best response. Both EUDR and PPWR are evolving, and some enforcement dates have been postponed, but the long-term direction is set.
The latest postponements show that implementation will take more time, but the direction is clear. We are ready for the EUDR, and by preparing now we can help customers secure traceability and stay ahead when enforcement begins.

By supporting customers in preparing early, Sappi helps avoid bottlenecks and demonstrates commitment to credible sustainability even before regulations take full effect.
3. Use collaboration as a force multiplier
Partnerships across the value chain are proving critical to scaling sustainable packaging. Despite cost pressures and economic concerns, fibre-based players are joining forces to accelerate progress.
“The fibre-based industry is sticking together for the next generation of packaging solutions at the right cost level,” said Van Ranst. “The more successful every fibre player is, the stronger the industry becomes.”
Sappi continues to play an active role in this collaboration, bringing converters, suppliers, machine manufacturers and brand owners into the conversation to ensure solutions are both practical and scalable.
Opportunity from complexity
New regulations bring complexity, but they also create opportunities for companies that are ready to act. By treating recyclability as a given, preparing ahead of enforcement, and leaning into collaboration, businesses can move with confidence. FACHPACK 2025 showed that the industry has the energy and commitment to make this shift. Sappi remains committed to driving progress with partners across the value chain.
