Just as water is essential for a thriving world, it is vital for our business too. Water plays a critical role in our manufacturing processes, and it’s never been more important to safeguard this invaluable resource to ensure its long-term sustainability.

In line with Sappi’s commitment to SDG6 - Clean Water and Sanitation - we’re continuously seeking innovative ways to reduce our water consumption, responsibly manage our resources and improve the quality of water we return to the waterways beside our mills.

Advancing water stewardship at Sappi Europe

Since 2022, our Water Stewardship Taskforce has been taking action to address water challenges. This includes reporting on metrics, exploring new technologies, engaging with stakeholders to integrate best practices and setting out a global Water Stewardship Policy to reinforce our commitment to responsible water management.

Our mills have been taking steps to enhance our water efficiency in Europe. We invite you to learn more about how our forward-thinking teams are making strides in strengthening our water resilience - ensuring the prosperity of Sappi’s operations and a sustainable source for generations to come.

Alfeld Mill: state-of-the art flotation units

Protecting the nearby River Leine is a priority for Alfed Mill. The installation of cutting-edge wastewater treatment technology to replace old microfiltration units has made the plant’s wastewater even cleaner and reduced its impact on the local environment.

Kirkniemi Mill: significant freshwater savings

Sometimes, small changes get meaningful results. Alongside a water balance tool to control water intake, a series of technical and operational modifications to optimise water use at start-ups and standstills at Kirkniemi Mill have resulted in some impressive savings.

Carmignano Mill: optimising PM6 water management

Saving and recycling water is at the core of a €30,000 investment at Carmignano Mill. Optimising the water management system of the PM6 pulper has regulated water withdrawal, reduced freshwater replenishment, minimised waste and balanced water usage.

Gratkorn Mill: PM11 improvements

By rethinking freshwater use, the PM11 team at Gratkorn Mill implemented two eco-effective projects at the paper machine. Since completion in 2022, the Mill has reduced annual costs and made considerable freshwater savings.
