Due to growing consumer environmental awareness and stricter regulatory packaging requirements, such as those imposed by the European PPWR (Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation), innovative barrier papers are increasingly being used for tea bag packaging.
These papers offer excellent product protection thanks to integrated barriers against oxygen, water vapor, grease, mineral oils (MOSH/MOAH), and aroma. They also optionally feature heat-sealable properties. Because these barrier papers can be recycled as a mono-material in paper waste stream, they are increasingly replacing the previously used aluminum or traditional plastic heat-sealable films in tea bag packaging applications. This paper-based packaging offers ecological advantages while simultaneously meeting important requirements for product protection, recyclability, and brand impact.
However, papers possess different material properties than conventionally used materials, which must be taken into account during the packaging process. For this reason, Teepack Spezialmaschinen, a leading German manufacturer of packaging machines for tea bags based in Meerbusch, Germany, and Sappi, a leading manufacturer of barrier papers, have launched a joint project for the world's largest packaging trade fair, interpack 2026, in Düsseldorf. This successful collaboration will be presented to the audience for the first time. Visitors to the Teepack booth in Hall 11, Stand E56, can witness live demonstrations of tea bags being processed with Sappi's Guard Pro OHS high-barrier paper on the machine Perfecta R at 400 bags per minute and on the machine Constanta at 250 bags per minute.
We worked very closely with Sappi’s application engineers and were thus able to optimize our machines for barrier papers. This allows us to contribute to more environmentally friendly tea bag packaging and supports Teepack Spezialmaschinen’s goal of preserving a livable environment for future generations.
