Sappi Europe shares insight on its sustainability journey at PulPaper in Helsinki

Today we are all experiencing the serious impact of climate change. Sappi Europe, as a global company, is committed to pursuing a stringent decarbonisation plan to reduce detrimental effects on the environment. As part of its long-term global commitment to climate protection and sustainable production, the company has successfully converted many of its production sites to renewable energy. At its Kirkniemi Mill in Lohja, Finland, Sappi Europe has invested an amount in the double-digit millions which will enable the full conversion of its energy supply to renewable bioenergy. This investment will reduce the mill’s direct fossil greenhouse gas emissions by roughly 90 per cent, equivalent to 230 000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. “This is just one of many measures we are taking on our journey towards greater sustainability. We are committed to being part of the solution and are rigorously focusing on our decarbonisation plan,” confirms Marco Eikelenboom, CEO of Sappi Europe.

Visitors to the PulPaper event in Helsinki will have an opportunity to find out more about how the company is achieving its goals to become sustainable and future-proof. The overarching theme of the fair, which is being held at the Helsinki Expo and Convention Centre between 7 – 9 June 2022, is “Building Tomorrow’s Bioeconomy”. Sappi Europe will be addressing this and related topics in a variety of talk formats. CEO Marco Eikelenboom and his colleague Sarah Price, Sustainability Director, will update visitors on the many challenges and opportunities facing the paper industry and explain how Sappi Europe is charting a sustainable, future-proof transformation. René Koehler, Director Paper & Packaging Solutions at Sappi Europe, will also be giving a presentation on the “Next Generation Paper Packaging” topic, revealing the versatility of paper as a packaging material and Sappi Europe’s exciting solutions in this key area.

The company’s latest innovations will be presented by Sarah Price in the “From Residue to Revenue” panel discussion. Finally, Maunu Toivari, Production Engineer at Kirkniemi Mill, and his colleague Kati Skarp, Organisation and People Development Manager, will highlight how a company’s success closely depends on its employees. Using Sappi Europe as an example, they will offer insight on how operational excellence can be achieved through consistently targeted employee support.

“We are very much looking forward to sharing our journey towards greater sustainability with visitors to the PulPaper event in Helsinki,” says Marco Eikelenboom. “We are all living on the same planet. We need to work together to save it.”
