Problem: A lumpy, thick putty-like material builds up on the blanket, primarily on the trailing edge of the image area, and interferes with the complete transfer of ink from plate to blanket to paper.
Problem: In-line UV curable coatings may greatly vary in performance with respect to substrate adhesion, retained gloss, blocking, flexibility, and odor depending upon coating formulation in conjunction with substrate characteristics, equipment application, and curing processes.
Problem: Although the printed ink film is dry, residual ink pigments transfer to where they are unwanted, usually onto unprinted areas of the paper; or ink and paper visibly mark through the mechanical action of rub or abrasion.
Problem: During the press run, ink uncontrollably feeds back and builds up on the dampener rolls negatively affecting ink/water balance, ink transfer, and print integrity. This condition may necessitate the need for frequent blanket/roller washes which further results in high paper waste and inconsistent print quality.
Problem: The printed and over-coated sheet demonstrates excessive up-curl and distortion in the press delivery after surface dry and tightening of the aqueous coating.
Hygroscopic in nature, paper is constantly changing to reach equilibrium with its environment. Like a sponge, it absorbs or loses moisture relative to the extremes of exposure and the surrounding atmosphere. The hygroscopic properties of paper vary from grade to grade, but dimensional stability and superior press performance is best assured when paper is fully acclimated and stabilized to a properly controlled
and climatized pressroom.
Problem: The printed web signatures exhibit sporadic print voids and/or streaks in localized areas of heavy ink coverage appearing as ink pick or ink smear without any disturbance to the paper coating.
Problem: The size of web paper changes after printing. Web paper, which is typically used for text, may expand outside the sheetfed cover after final trim in the bindery.
Problem: During and after the roll splice, oscillating web weave at the infeed or the chill rolls continues for a prolonged period of time as the web guides hunt and over-correct in attempt to bring the web back in alignment causing dot slur or side-lay misregister resulting in excessive paper waste at each roll splice.
René Köhler, Head of Business Development Packaging and Speciality Papers at Sappi, explains: “The integrated mineral oil barrier of our Guard papers eliminates the need for additional special coatings or laminations.”
