Product stewardship

We’re unlocking the chemistry of trees to meet the challenges of a carbon-constrained world.
In the communities where we work, we plant seeds of change and opportunity that enhance people’s everyday lives. Our goal is also to be a great place to work where all people are inspired in their role and empowered to grow to their full potential. Our sustainability ambassadors are key to deliver on this promise.
We responsibly source woodfibre to ensure that the millions of hectares of forestland we rely on remain healthy today and tomorrow.
A flourishing forest provides a great many things–clean air, drinkable water, recreational opportunities, animal habitat, beautiful scenery, cool shade and, yes, paper and wood products.
At Sappi, we believe that the right approach when managing timber is to integrate forest management–especially timber harvesting–into the local culture by sharing information and collaborating with local communities and the public, as showcased in these three coastal Maine harvests.
Since we don’t own forestland in Europe, we work closely with our partners to uphold our responsible sourcing practices and encourage sustainable forestry.
Sappi ReFibre: following the principles of reduce, recover, re-use – and capacitate
Sappi ReFibre, Sappi Southern Africa’s secondary fibre division, sources used paper products from an extensive network of agents across the Southern African region as well as from waste producers.
In South Africa, we’re using our leveraging our novel Xylex technology – acquired in 2017 – to progress the extraction of sugars from woodfibre to produce xylitol and furfural.
