Sappi UK excited by printing excellence demonstrated by next generation of printers

Sappi UK is delighted to be participating in the Worldskills UK National Finals (NEC Brimingham 15-17 Nov) as Official Competition Sponsors for Offset Printing. The show is one of the UK’s biggest skills and careers events developed to inspire and motivate fashion designers, web developers, engineers and of course the printers of tomorrow with exciting opportunities in further education, skills and apprenticeships. With over 100,000 visitors expected over the 3-day event, it promises to be a hive of activity.

Competitors in the printing competition, who are young people studying, training and / or working in a print environment, will have to demonstrate the following selected skills:

 

  • Prepare, operate and adjust 5-colour sheet-fed Heidelberg offset press with remote control console (semi-)automatic plate mounting

  • Produce printed sheets in required quality and quantity

  • Mix ink to Pantone reference Use of spectrophotometric measuring device

  • Have knowledge of and use a programmable paper cutter

As primary partner for the Offset Printing Competition, Heidelberg will be providing the machines (Speedmaster SX 52-5  35 x 50 format ) for the printing skills challenge).

 

The event will open on Wednesday 14th November, allowing competitors time to familiarize themselves with the location and catch up with other team mates and competitors. The 15th and the 16th will be key days for accumulating scores, with the winners being announced on the evening of Saturday 17thNovember during a presentation dinner and award ceremony. The winning printer, along with winners from the other competition categories, will then be put forward to compete on behalf of the UK at the Grand Final Worldskills Event which will be held in Leipzig in 2013, congregating national winners from all over the world.

 

Robin Sponder Sappi Technical Customer service Manager and Mike Haselton, Sappi Technical Sales Manager will share jury duties over the three days of the competition and will have the pleasure of offering the final 4 competitors in the offset printing category each 1500 sheets of paper Sappi l Magno/Hello Satin 170gsm.
