Reducing our transport emissions in North America

By reducing our greenhouse gas emissions and scaling up nature-based solutions, we're increasingly part of the solution to climate change.

Climate change is the defining environmental challenge of our time and at Sappi, we want to be part of the solution. We’ve committed globally to reducing our specific greenhouse gas emissions by 17% by 2025.

Our participation in the SmartWay programme in North America is helping us to meet this target. In 2004, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency developed the programme to reduce emissions from freight transport.

This voluntary public-private partnership programme provides a mechanism that allows logistics providers, transportation providers, and shippers to communicate their collective fuel use and calculated freight emissions. It enables companies like us to benchmark our performance and identify strategies to reduce emissions through the selection of modes, carriers and equipment.

Since 2009, we’ve been a proud certified SmartWay Transport Partner. This means that we use carriers that leverage technology and design to minimise our collective carbon footprint. We work toward increasing the amount of our freight moved on intermodal and rail as well as increasing the amount of our freight moved on certified carriers.
