Responsibility: packing it into our products

Consumers around the world are concerned about the effect of plastic-based packaging on the world’s oceans and on the climate. At Sappi, so are we.

Paper packaging is a renewable, sustainable alternative. However, when it comes to food, there are concerns that components from mineral oil hydrocarbon compounds – adhesives and printing inks containing mineral oil from production, for example – could migrate into paper packaging.

We’re meeting the needs of fast-moving consumer good companies who need integrated sealing and barrier functionality for their products in a number of different ways.

  • Recyclable Sappi Seal is a flexible packaging solution with improved sealing properties designed to replace hot seal laminates made from plastic. Developed for use as flexible standard packaging in the food and non-food sectors, where hot sealing properties are required. This includes primary packaging, such as sachets, but also secondary packaging like flow-wraps for sweets, toys or DIY goods.
  • Having acquired the barrier film technology of Rockwell Solutions, we can offer solvent-free lidding for the food packaging market.
  • In response to demand, we have expanded our portfolio of barrier papers. With integrated barriers against oxygen, water vapour, grease, aroma and mineral oil, there is no need to apply special coatings or laminations with these papers. They prevent any mineral oil from getting into the final product, which keeps products such as rice, cereals, tea and chocolate free of Mineral Oil Saturated Hydrocarbons (MOSH) and Mineral Oil Aromatic Hydrocarbons (MOAH) residue.
