Sappi ReFibre: following the principles of reduce, recover, re-use – and capacitate

Sappi ReFibre for a more circular world

Sappi ReFibre, Sappi Southern Africa’s secondary fibre division, sources used paper products from an extensive network of agents across the Southern African region as well as from waste producers. The recovered board and paper is used to supplement virgin fibre in the manufacturing of packaging paper grades at Tugela and Ngodwana Mills.

In order to promote transformation and small business development, under Sappi’s Enterprise and Supplier Development Programme, Sappi ReFibre provides suppliers with equipment and business support to several 100% black-owned recycling companies in South Africa. We have made a total capital investment of approximately ZAR10 million into these companies.

Tugela Mill
Tugela Mill has been in operation since 1945 and is currently the oldest purpose-built mill in the Sappi group. The mill produces pulp for its own consumption, containerboard (corrugating medium) and lignosulphonate for export.
Ngodwana Mill
Ngodwana Mill has been in operation since 1966 and entered the dissolving pulp (DP) market in 2013 with the conversion of part of the mill’s paper grade pulp production to DP.
