Expanding functional paper production at Alfeld Mill

Scaling-up our functional paper business is at the core of Sappi’s strategy to support a more circular economy. Investments made at Alfeld Mill in Germany in 2021 are enabling us to bring these circular functional papers to more of our European customers.

Functional papers support the shift away from fossil-based materials towards renewable, paper-based packaging solutions that also provide exceptional product protection. Recyclable in the paper waste stream, functional papers are circular by design.

When Sappi acquired Scottish Rockwell Solutions in 2017, it deepened our existing expertise in barrier paper production and affirmed our leadership role in this growing market. Today, Sappi innovation in functional papers offers customers a growing range of light-weight packaging solutions with integrated barrier qualities.

To further expand our production capacity, in 2021 Sappi announced a significant investment to establish this new barrier coating technology for functional paper packaging at our speciality paper mill in Alfeld, Germany. The investment covers a coating line for water-based dispersions and the necessary finishing equipment (slitter and rewinder) with an annual capacity of approximately 300 million sqm per year.
