Taking climate action

We believe that actions speak louder than words when it comes to sustainability. That’s why we’re taking meaningful steps to decarbonise our global business – hand-in-hand with scaling up nature-based solutions.

The solutions we co-create with our partners are increasing the share of renewable energy powering our mills at the same time as enhancing the energy efficiency of our operations.

Meanwhile, our people continue to push the boundaries of innovation with woodfibre for a bio-based circular economy.

We’re working in alliance with nature, technology and people to decarbonise our global business.

That means allying state-of-the-art engineering with forests and nature’s tools – both to increase the share of renewable energy that powers our operations and to reimagine the use of woodfibre in the everyday products we all need for more sustainable lives.

And that means fostering a unique and innovative culture that spans the globe – with committed, hardworking people dedicated to making the everyday more sustainable. .

How we’re decarbonising

At Sappi, we’ve set greenhouse gas reduction targets validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) to decarbonise our global business and contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

In 2022 we also created our first Sustainable Financing Framework. We are advancing on three pillars for decarbonisation that each region applies to their specific business and regulatory environments.

We co-create by continuously investing in
state-of-the-art technology and processes to
make Sappi more eco-effective.

We co-create to increase our share of renewable
energy and procure more green electricity.

We co-create to produce fibre-based solutions
that can replace fossil derived or more
resource-intensive products.

We’re unlocking the power of trees to make every day more sustainable – for the customers we serve, the communities where we operate and the planet we all call home.
Our teams are passionate about harvesting the power in and beyond trees for decarbonisation and CoCreating solutions with partners who share our ambition. Papierholz Austria is one of those partners.
The steam boilers that Sappi needs for paper production are increasingly part of the solution to climate change. Instead of relying on fossil fuels like gas, Maastricht Mill has installed an electronic or ‘e-boiler’ so that wind and solar can become part of the energy mix.
Sappi Gratkorn’s next step to increase the share of renewable energy
As part of Sappi Europe's full scale decarbonisation roadmap, Gratkorn mill is expanding the share of biomass to be used as an energy source, further driving the move away from fossil fuels as part of the mill’s contribution to the European roadmap.
The EU and its Member States are leading the world towards the sustainable, low-carbon future agreed in the Paris Climate Accord and recently affirmed in the European Green Deal.
Kirkniemi Mill in Finland took a big leap forward in 2022 on the journey to decarbonisation by installing the equipment required to receive, store and handle biomass to power its multi-fuel boiler. During 2023 the mill should be able to finally exit coal and instead become powered by renewable bioenergy.
