Westbrook Mill

Our mill

Sappi's Westbrook Mill near Portland, Maine is where the history of Sappi Fine Paper North America began in 1854 with the S D Warren Company and where the tradition of papermaking has an unshakable hold. It is the site of the first coated papermaking facility in the United States of America and the place where Sappi Fine Paper North America first developed its reputation for quality and innovation.

The mill is primarily a speciality paper production facility for coated fine and casting release paper. Its paper machine primarily produces base paper, which is coated off-line.

Westbrook also has six speciality coaters, including four employing Sappi Fine Paper North America’s patented Ultracast® process. This process uses an electron beam to cure coating against a finely engraved steel roll, resulting in a virtually exact replication of the roll pattern. These release papers are then used to simulate leather and other textures for fabrics and to simulate wood grains for flooring materials. Over 700 manufacturers of man-made leather and decorative laminates around the world specify Sappi's Ultracast® brand to create fabrics and laminates for leading companies in such industries as shoes, luggage, automotive and flooring.

Sappi Fine Paper North America also has a research and development facility at Westbrook.
