Our mill
Paper has been produced at Gratkorn (Austria) for more than four centuries. Sappi totally revolutionised the mill with the building of the largest and most advanced coated fine paper production line in the world. Gratkorn has an annual capacity of 950,000 tons of triple-coated fine paper on just two paper machines and 255,000 tons of totally chlorine free (TCF) chemical pulp. After extension of Gratkorn’s sheeting plant it now has an annual sheet finishing capacity of 800,000 tons.
At Gratkorn making quality paper is a way of life.
Gratkorn Mill has an integrated pulp plant, using locally harvested wood from sustainable forest (70% sawmill waste, 30% thinnings) and employing peroxide bleaching technology. Coating materials too are prepared on site.
Using advanced technology, every step in the manufacturing has been designed to provide the highest levels of paper formation, dimensional stability, even-sidedness, smoothness and surface appearance.
Special fully automated transporters are used to move the 135 ton jumbo reels around safely to the calendering and winder area, where up to 1,600 reels can be processed per day. The reels are sheeted in the finishing area and then taken by shuttle vehicles across the river to the dispatch store.

Our products
The coating process at Gratkorn Mill is specifically designed to provide papers with a visually outstanding surface and superb printing properties. These fine triple-coated papers are available in gloss, silk and matt qualities under the Magno brand name and in gloss and matt under the brand name HannoArt.
All papers offer excellent ink drying properties, superb colour reproduction, high print gloss, problem-free handling and outstanding runability. The range of sheet-fed offset printing papers is complemented by a Royal Roto branded glossy web offset quality with equally outstanding features.
The range of papers span from 90 to 200g/m² and is complemented by board weight grades manufactured at the sister mill in Maastricht (The Netherlands).
Coated papers from Gratkorn Mill are used mainly in high gloss advertising for brochures and leaflets as well as for art catalogues, books, magazines, annual reports, calenders etc. These papers are the preferred choice where highest print quality and outstanding colour reproduction is needed and where best results are expected in die cutting, embossing, oil printing, dispersion and UV-varnishing or laminating.

Our environment
It is our policy to generate economic returns necessary to maintain a sustainable business in such a way that we continue to minimise our impact on the environment, encourage the development of our people and contribute to the communities in which we operate.
Gratkorn is an integrated mill situated on either side of the river Mur near Graz (Austria). The entire paper mill has been designed to make superior quality paper at top productivity levels; the highest standards of engineering have been allied to excellence in personnel qualifications.
In this ultra-modern mill every detail has its role to play and to the people at Gratkorn attention to detail form the essence of manufacturing excellence.
The mill has a long record of continuous improvement in its manufacturing and environmental activities:
- Sappi recognises that people are its most valuable asset and operates a policy of safety first throughout the mill.
- All effluent is oxygen aerated and fully treated in the sewage plant before it returns to the river Mur, a pure-water river.
- Recycling rates are the highest in the industry.
- The mill generates its own electricity from the combined heat and power plant, using a high proportion of renewable fuels.

Gratkorn Mill was one of the first paper and pulp mills certified ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001 and EMAS.
Sappi Fine Paper Europe was the first paper company in the world to achieve multi-site, cross-border group Chain of Custody certification. All Sappi Fine Paper Europe mills and its sales organisations hold Chain of Custody certificates for both Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) schemes; these certifications provide proof from third-party certification bodies that the wood and fibre we use come from sustainable and controlled sources. |

Our community
|
|
The mills of Sappi Fine Paper Europe support schools and kindergartens from their surrounding communities with donations of paper. For some of the youngest children it is often their first contact with paper and they use it with remarkable creativity for drawings and collages.
Teachers appreciate Sappi’s contribution and also inform their pupils about the value of paper; how it continually contributes to our civilisation as a 'culture bearer' as well as the environmentally friendly way in which we manufacture paper from renewable raw materials.
Sappi Fine Paper Europe also supports the restoration of historic books, which can become damaged due to moisture and incorrect storage practices. One such example is a 500-year old book from the Zisterzienser monastery in Rhein/Austria, providing an invaluable glimpse into the past - a tactile history lesson, only achievable on paper. |
