Our environment

Biberist Mill is certified ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. The mill also holds Chain of Custody certificates for both Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) schemes; these certifications provide proof from third-party certification bodies that the wood and fibre we use come from sustainable and controlled sources.

Biberist Mill runs an economic quality management system according to ISO 9001 and is obliged to fulfil certain requirements and to continuously improve the effectiveness of this system. The quality system is periodically reconsidered regarding its effectiveness and economy. This reconsideration includes the suitability of the quality policy and the purpose of the organisation.

The mill aims at avoiding or reducing ecological damage wherever possible through the efficient use of raw materials and energy. We follow the guidelines of an agreement in co-operation with the Office for the Environment of the Canton of Solothurn and the Environmental Management System in accordance with ISO 14001 in all our environmental activities. Both measures ensure that the process of constant improvement is kept active at all times.

We track our purchases constantly, and also the buyers are committed to our environmental standards. For example cellulose bleached without the use of chlorine is purchased exclusively and the mineral extenders are predominantly from Austria where decomposition is regulated by strict environmental laws.

The required water flows to the plant mainly from a natural ground water deposit. The rest is obtained from two ground water reservoirs. The water is used in production several times through closed cycles. Any effluents are cleaned at the company-owned two-stage effluent purification plant. Monitoring this process is subject to strict controls by the Cantonal Office for the Environment.

Energy is provided in the form of steam and electricity by Energie Biberist AG (EBAG). EBAG uses primarily environmentally friendly natural gas, which is turned into heat and electricity for better energy use through heat and power coupling. During the production process, the waste heat is re-used through modern heat recycling plants.

We use the residues and re-use the raw materials efficiently by returning as much as possible into the production process. All remainders are either burned to generate energy or collected in separate reservoirs and recycled.

In transport logistics Biberist Mill is trying to reduce the pollution in partnership with Dreier AG and Regionalverkehr Mittelland AG.

Following extensive renovation measures, the mill has reached conformity with the regulations about noise prevention.
